The Deal Timeball Tower has a fascinating maritime history. Originally built as a semaphore tower, it was used to signal messages to ships anchored in the Downs or passing through the English Channel. Later, it became a Victorian timeball tower, helping sailors set their chronometers accurately before long voyages.
